The University of Málaga (UMA) is a public Spanish university founded in 1972. It currently hosts more than 35,000 students and employs approximately 2,694 faculty members. For the 2025/2026 academic year, UMA offers 77 Bachelor’s and Double Bachelor’s Degrees, 86 Master’s and Double Master’s Degrees, 28 Doctoral Programs, as well as a variety of its own specialized qualifications. Academic teaching is delivered across 19 schools and faculties, supported by staff affiliated with 71 departments.

Within this university, one of the key research centers is the Institute of Software Technologies and Engineering (ITIS), which is dedicated to scientific and technical research in the field of software technologies. Its main mission is to advance the development and application of software through research, innovation, education, and technology transfer. Due to the inherently transversal nature of software, the institute provides an interdisciplinary environment where experts from different technological fields and application domains work together to push the boundaries of software engineering.

A central challenge in software research lies in building reliable and secure software systems whose behavior can be predicted and whose errors can be minimized. As digital systems have become increasingly ubiquitous, software failures can significantly impact the security, health, and economy of individuals and organizations. ITIS therefore focuses its core research efforts on studying methods and tools that improve software development technologies, particularly in application areas that are sensitive to these challenges and that often form part of the technological priorities identified in strategic R&D&I initiatives for the society of the future.

In this context, multidisciplinary collaboration is essential, since software only acquires full relevance within its application domain, and technological progress must be guided by the specific challenges present in each of these domains. The institute’s main objectives can be summarized as follows:

• Conducting research in all areas related to Software Engineering and Software Technology, with a special emphasis on transversal and interdisciplinary aspects.
• Transferring technology and knowledge to society at large, and especially to local and national productive sectors.
• Promoting the internationalization of the institute through collaborative R+D+i projects and staff exchange programs that attract talent and enhance researcher training.
• Consolidating a stable organizational structure that enables the pursuit of these objectives.
